ADVISORY BOARD

 

 

Doug Taren, PhD

Doug is an Associate Professor in Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona, and is the chair of its Master of Public Health Program.  During the past 20 years Dr. Taren has conducted research on women?s health, the prevention of preterm infants, the development of educational programs, the improvement of dietary assessment methods, and child nutrition. He was an original member of the Rocky Mountain Public Health Education Consortium and directs its Maternal and Child Health Certificate Program.  His research and teaching has included projects in Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Venezuela, Mexico, China, Nepal, Kenya, and Zambia. These areas of interest have been supported by national and international agencies including the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the United Nations.  Dr. Taren is the author of two textbooks, numerous book chapters and more than 60 published articles.

 

Francisco Soto Mas, MD, MPH, PhD

Francisco is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, School of Public Health, University of North Texas Health Science Center. Dr. Soto Mas has more than 15 years of professional experience in medicine and public health as a practitioner, researcher and academician. His areas of expertise include chronic disease prevention and control, program planning and evaluation, health behavior theory, social determinants of health, and Latino health issues. Dr. Soto Mas is currently involved in several research initiatives. He is Principal Investigator on several projects, including: Háblenos de su salud, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded project for improving health care language access to Spanish-speaking populations; a bioterrorism-related grants funded by Texas Department of Health; and a federally funded initiative for increasing the number of underrepresented Latino students in health and science professions. 

 

Cynthia Thomson, RD, PhD

Cynthia is the co-director of the Arizona Diet and Behavioral Assessment Center, part of the University of Arizona ? Arizona Cancer Center. She is Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Program in Nutritional Sciences, University of Arizona.  Dr. Thomson received her Ph.D. from the Interdisciplinary Program in Nutritional Sciences, University of Arizona.  She has over 16 years of clinical experience as well as 10 years of experience in cancer research. Her interests include breast cancer and dietary intervention research, phytochemicals and functional foods assessment, and diet research instrument validation.

 

 

Maribel Tobar, MS

Maribel received her Masters Degree in Nutrition in Public Health from the University of San Carlos, Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panamá , Guatemala. She is a past director of the Department of Nutrition at the Ministry of Public Health in El Salvador, where she directed and implemented various nutritional programs for underserved pregnant and lactating mothers and children. During her work in El Salvador, she also worked as a consultant with the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP) and the World Bank.

She facilitated the nutrition component of the Women?s Health Initiative study, a nationwide women?s health study with 98% retention over 10 years. She has also coordinated the following studies: Evaluating Tobacco Control Best Practices in Southwest Hispanic and Native American Populations, Mapping the Process of Smoking Cessation in pregnant and lactating women, Behavioral Strategies to Reduce Error in Measuring diet, and Evaluation of the Southwest Food Frequency Questionnaire.
